Aluminum cans, PET, paper bottles... sustainable packaging solutions for the beverage industry

The concept of environmental protection has become increasingly popular in the world in the past two years, and the concept of environmental protection and low carbon has increasingly become a new concept of fashion consumption. The new concept of "fashionable" consumption will lead to a large area of sustainable packaging products occupying consumers' mental resources. In the beverage market, aluminum cans, PET and glass bottles are the most commonly used primary packaging solutions, and the development of paper bottles in recent years has also provided packaging solutions for the beverage industry.

The infinite recyclability of aluminum cans makes them a sustainable solution for beverage packaging, the most recycled beverage packaging in the world.

Compared with plastic packaging materials, aluminum can packaging materials have distinct advantages, such as high recycling rate, fast recycling, and better quality maintenance during the recycling process. This infinite recycling and environmental protection regeneration has obvious advantages, which is in line with the sustainable development of the current society. requirements; Unlike plastic packaging, aluminum cans are both waterproof and breathable, protecting beverages from sunlight, keeping them cooler for longer and most importantly, retaining their fresh taste. And the aluminum can has a special metallic luster, which can make the product look bright and more individual.

Some large beverage companies have also begun to replace aluminum can packaging. In 2019, PepsiCo announced that it will replace the plastic packaging of some products with aluminum cans, and the aluminum can packaging of its brand Pure Water will gradually roll out.

PET

PET is also the most commonly used packaging material in beverage and rigid food packaging. PET packaging is becoming increasingly lightweight and durable so it can efficiently transport products without secondary packaging, drastically reducing fuel requirements and greenhouse gas emissions during product transport.

In the UK, about 72% of beverage packaging and up to 92% of bottled water choose PET materials; in terms of sports and energy drinks, the proportion is 67%. Large soft drink companies have set targets to ensure 100% of all packaging is recycled by 2025. Many companies are aiming to increase their recycling rate from 25% in 2020 to 50% in 2025.

For example, Nestle Water has set a goal of achieving 50% recyclable PET packaging for its products by 2025. PepsiCo transitioned its premium LIFEWTR water brand to 100% rPET in the US in 2020. As an average for its portfolio, PepsiCo aims to use 25% recycled plastic by 2025 (and 50% rPET in the EU by 2030).

The glass packaging market also connects beverage manufacturers with their sustainable packaging goals.

The average American-made glass bottle contains about 30 percent recycled glass. Glass bottles are 100% infinitely recyclable, and their circular nature further enhances the attractiveness of glass as a packaging option. Glass does not degrade over time and is mostly manufactured and recycled near local and regional markets. The glass is made from non-toxic and natural materials, providing another key sustainability attribute to the brand owner.

The concept of carton bottles seems to be popping up in recent years, with innovations continuing to break through the barriers in the pursuit of sustainable packaging that has sustainable benefits and ideally coincides with recycling.

The latest research report shows that in 2020, the value of paper bottles is 25.2 million US dollars, and the use in other categories such as food, wine and spirits will continue to increase, and the compound annual growth rate is expected to stabilize at more than 6% in the next 10 years .
